Front-End Web Design Internship

Front-End Web Design Internship

Calling all aspiring front-end web designers! Tuckerman is looking for an up-and-coming designer who is passionate about user experience and developing his/her skills. You’ll have the opportunity to work on live, production code and to make a meaningful impact on our digital presence.

Web experience is obviously a plus, though we’re willing to work with a less experienced designer provided he/she has some requisite skills and is eager to learn. This position will focus on the front-end of our web stack, primarily HTML/CSS and Javascript/Jquery.

A strong eye for good design is also a plus. We use git for version control but can get (no pun intended) you up to speed if you’re not a regular user.

This isn’t a gig where you’ll need ten people to sign off before you can make changes of any sort. You’ll be working directly with the founders who have a huge appreciation for web design and development.

About Us

Tuckerman is devoted to “clothes made right” - high quality clothing that’s better for people and the planet. We launched in late 2014 with our first line of dress shirts made from organic cotton, Italian fabric, and woven in Fall River, Massachusetts. We’re a certified Benefit Corporation and based in New Haven, Connecticut.

About You

You love building things and take special delight in crafting great experiences through visual media. You love learning new skills, frameworks, and tools that make designing faster and better. You want to put your talent to work for something more meaningful than a boring, corporate gig. You believe (and have perhaps always suspected) that design is fundamentally about solving problems.

What you’ll be doing

  • General site improvement
  • Constructing landing pages
  • Developing new ideas for the site and pitching them to the founders
  • Exploring plugins and frameworks to help make parts of the site more interactive
  • Improving user flow (purchasing process, email signup process, etc.)
  • Exploring ecommerce best practices and seeing where we can improve

Skills Needed

  • HTML (required)
  • CSS (required)
  • Javascript (preferred)
  • Git (preferred)
  • Attention to detail
  • Willingness to track down solutions if the answer isn’t immediately present (i.e., coding 101)
  • Appreciate working as part of a fun, dynamic team
  • Reliable execution and follow-through

What You’ll Learn

  • Leveling up your HTML/CSS/Javascript skills
  • Agile development (which we use for everything at Tuckerman, not just web design!)
  • The Shopify platform (which uses the Liquid Templating scheme)
  • Designing for ecommerce
  • What it's like to work at a startup

Nuts and Bolts

  • Internship length is 3 months (though we may have some flexibility)
  • Expected contribution of 5-10 hours a week
  • Applications are accepted on a rolling basis
  • Being based in New Haven, CT is preferred, though telecommuting may be possible
  • Internship is unpaid though we are happy to work with your school to offer credit
